A First. Hopefully not a Last

This has been a month of firsts…NaNoWriMo and a blog. Who would’ve have thought?

This summer I decided “You know what? I’m gonna write a book,” complete with firm nod. So, down I sat with keyboard and thoughts, and batted around ideas. Which genre? Magic and vampires and werewolves? Nah, overdone. Oversexed twenty-somethings? Shake of the head. Too new. Straight out porn? I’m good, but not that good…

And then it hit me…Everyone (mostly) enjoys a good love story. Chick Lit it is! Ding! We have a winnah! Now, to choose my Heroine and Hero, supporting cast and location. Do I include a love triangle? Of course! Do I throw in teen angst? Hell yeah! What about some really hot CoD:MW3 action at the end? Duh! No brainer!

At least, that’s how it has turned out.

NaNoWriMo…National Novel Writing Month, to be precise. Its a crazy 30-day, 50k (or more) word challenge encompassing your entire life for the month of November. Say goodbye to sleep, family and cleanliness for 30 days, and crank out a masterpiece worthy of critical acclaim! Enjoy meals at the computer while yelling “I love you!” to your loved ones. It’s gonna be a rough ride.

And you know what? It hasn’t been too awful. I have the support of select friends and family, my awesome NaNo Maine group on Facebook and our cats. Cannot forget about the cats.

As of today, there are two days left in the NaNoWriMo challenge and I have almost accomplished my goal. Neglected everyone? Check. Wrote 50k words (almost 52k)? Check. Spilled brain juice on the floor? That was yesterday, sooo…Check. Organized the chaos into something resembling an actual book? That’s tomorrow. Validated my word count with the NaNoWriMo Goddess? Coming Thursday.

What to do when the month ends and the challenge is over, you ask? That’s easy: EDIT.

Very nice, Jessica. As the doctor would say, “Congratulations, it’s a blog.”
